Baby Shower Games and Ideas

Baby shower games are a big part of a baby shower. They are good for livening up the party. First, it’s a good idea let everyone introduce herself and say whether she is a friend or family member of the mother. You can play an icebreaker game to help your guests get to know each other a little. It is easier than ever to find game ideas with the Internet. For example, if you do a search using your favorite search engine for “baby shower ice breaker games” or even just “ice breaker games,” you will get quite a good list of ideas. Then you can select which ones would best suit your group and be prepared to play those.

The stereotypical baby shower has only women guests. For the main activities during this type of baby shower, there are many traditional popular baby shower games. Some of these games are: guess the baby item, how many baby items can you name, bobbing for pacifiers, baby bingo, guess the mommy’s tummy size, have a lucky ducky prize, and place the baby on the mommy. Many of these games are similar to other children’s games. For example, place the baby on the mommy is a spin off of pin the tail on the donkey.

Baby shower bingo is a traditional and still popular game that lets the guests participate as the mother opens the presents. Name That Baby Tune is a good way to introduce music and fun to the baby shower. You can make a CD with ten or more songs on it and have the word baby in it. If you research song titles baby on the Internet many choices will pop up. Some examples are: Baby I Need Your Lovin,’ Baby I’m Yours, Baby Its Cold Outside, Be My Baby, Baby Love, Baby One More Time, Baby Boy, and Baby Come Back. Play the CD during the party let the guests know they can name the title and artist of each song. Have a special prize for the guest who can name the title and artist of the most “baby” songs.

If you are having a non traditional baby shower where the guests will be couples or families, make sure the games that are suitable for your guest list. The Make a Baby game is one such game. Using Play Doh, all of the guests get several pieces of Play Doh in different colors. They then make a baby. After the babies are created, have the expectant parents choose the Play Doh baby they like the best. This can add some laughs to the party. Another game good for couples at baby showers is one in which each couple gets a baby doll, a cloth diaper, and diapers pins. Then they put the diaper on the doll, but they must hold hands. Diaper Olympics is a game that injects a bit of a sporty edge to the games. The guests are put into two groups. The baby dolls with diapers are set on a table. One person from each group runs to the table, gets the diaper off, powders the doll, and puts the diaper on again. Then relays it to the next person.

So if you are tasked the throw a baby shower, use the wealth of information available tgo you via the Internet. There are literally hundreds of baby shower games to be found and many of them are printable to help you as the hostess of the party enjoy the party as much as the guests. Playing some entertaining games at your baby shower can liven up your guests and the mother-to-be and can frequently cause some hilarious things to happen, which can make the baby shower that much more special for all in attendance.

Baby shower games can be both silly and entertaining. Some are intended to embarrass the mom- or dad-to-be, but others can really be fun and may even teach you something. The promise of a prize, however small, adds to the fun.

These are some of our favorite shower games:

    Guess the Girth
Check with the guest of honor in advance on this one. Some women may find this game a bit too personal, but if she's not shy, it can be a lot of fun. All you need is a ball or two of string. Ask guests to cut a length of string that they think will stretch around the future mom's belly. After everyone has had a turn, the mother-to-be measures and cuts a string that fits her belly. Compare her string to the pieces of string from each guest. The person who is closest wins. You'll be amazed at what people's estimates are. It's a great icebreaker and always good for some laughs.

    Baby Picture Match Game
Before the shower, ask the guests for pictures of themselves as babies. Assemble the photos on a board and assign each a number. During the shower, pass out sheets of paper to the guests so they can match each baby to the appropriate grown-up. If the guests don't know each other well, name tags can help the process. The person who gets the most correct answers wins.

    Baby Quiz
Ask the grandparents to write down what the parents were like as babies, and include vital statistics such as time of birth, height, weight, first tooth, first smile, age when toilet-trained, and early signs of their personality. Based on that information, make up a quiz about the future parents to hand out to guests. The person with the most correct answers wins a prize.

    Melt the Ice
The day before the shower, freeze diaper pins, miniature pacifiers, tiny plastic babies, or similar items in ice cube trays. Give each guest an ice cube in a glass of water or other drink. The first person whose ice has melted so that the frozen item floats freely in the glass shouts, "My water broke!" and wins the game.

    Swaddle/Dress the Baby
Get a life-size baby doll, receiving blanket, cloth diaper, diaper wrap, and onesie. Guests take turns trying to either dress or swaddle the baby. Time each guest — the one who does it fastest wins.

    Don't Say "Baby"
Give every guest a clothespin to attach to her clothing and wear during the shower. Tell everyone not to say the word "baby" for the rest of the shower. If someone hears another guest say the forbidden word (and it's hard not to say it!), she gets to take the other guest's clothespin(s). The winner? Whoever has the most clothespins at the end of the shower.

    Guess the Baby Food
Buy six or eight jars of baby food, all different flavors, and enough plastic spoons for all of the guests. Remove the labels from the jars and number them. At the shower, have everyone taste each jar and write down what kind of food they think it is, without letting fellow guests see their answers. Whoever gets the most right wins a prize. For a large shower, you may need to buy two jars of each kind and divide your guests into groups.

    The Diaper Bag Memory Game
This is one of those memory games in which you add onto the list until it becomes too long to remember. The first player starts by saying the name of an item that would normally be found in a diaper bag. The second player lists that item plus one of their own. Each subsequent person must list everything already mentioned, in the proper order, and then add one more item. If you forget an item or list them out of order, you're "out." The last person still in the game is the winner.

Food.. you could have a sandwich station. cold cuts and different cheese and bread cut up small so people could make there own sandwiches. It is simple but you can make it look really nice! Also works for different types of guest. because if you just want to nibble on something you can just eat a piece of ham or cheese.. but for those hungrier bunch they can make the whole sand which.
Also vegetables with dips. Baby carrots and green peppers cut up long and thin.. stuff like that.

    Games that are cheap

1.You can ask some of your guest to bring in baby picks of themselves and have people guess who is who.
2.Get toilet paper or string and people have to cut it off at however big enough a piece they think they need to wrap around your belly.. the one close enough wins.
    3. You would have to buy this but I don't think it cost too much.. you get about 5 different gerber baby foods and people have to guess what the flavor is. You just need to get one of each and split it up in different cups for different contestants. Obviously mark before hand which is which.

Potatoe game. Have all the ladies put a potatoe between their legs and walk with it to the othere side of the room w/o dropping it, and drop it into a bowl. Whoever can do this the fastest w/o dropping the potaoe before getting to the bowl wins a prize. Another game is getting laundry clips in one hand and using the one hand to clip onto a hanger, w/o dropping the clips see how many the ladies can clip the pins to the hanger with only one hand. Whoever gets the most pinned wins a prize. Last game. take toilet paper and have the ladies guess how big the mom is around the belly w/o touching her. Whoever guesses the closest wins. These games were played at my baby shower and we had a blast !!!!

Editing to add on to the answer above: about the names on back – for baby showers, I have seen fairy tale characters or nursery rhymes. You'll have to be sure that they are well-known in Germany but that shouldn't be a problem since that part of the world is where many of our fairy tales came from…

Why don't you start the invite (unless you've already sent them) by calling it an "American-Style Baby Shower to welcome the baby and supply the nursery"? This way, they'll get the hint. Are baby showers not common in Germany?

Did the mommy-to-be register anywhere? You could also add the registry information to the invite, especially if it is on-line.

Another game would be to take labels off baby food jars and have the guests try to guess the food that is in them – stay away from the blended ones though since they'd be impossible.

Another game is to put clothes pins on people – start with 5 or so… then everytime they say "baby" or "no" or some other key word, a person can take one of the clothes pins away – the person with the most wins. Funny how people will work around words or try to get folks to say it…

A cheap gift might be a little terra cotta flower pot with flower seeds – to signify new life! Or a fall plant of some sort.

    Have fun!!
