Making Homemade Baby Wipes

Making Homemade Baby Wipes

Wanna save money? Making homemade baby wipes takes just a few minutes of work and save loads of money. Here’s the money saving recipe:

Take 1 roll of premium paper towels and cut in half (width wise) using a sharp knife. Cheap, thin paper towels will rip easily. I recommend making your cloth wipes 1/2 a roll at a time, but if you have more than one child or feel like half a roll doesn’t last as long as you would like, use both halves.

When making: (1) 1/2 roll

1 cup Water 1 Tablespoon baby wash, shampoo or soap shavings
* 1/2-1 Tablespoon baby oil or olive oil (preferably organic)**

When making: (2) 1/2 rolls

2 cups Water 2 Tablespoon baby wash, shampoo or soap shavings
* 1-2 Tablespoon baby oil or olive oil (preferably organic)**

*Look for chemical-free products. My first choice is Earth Mama Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash and Earth Mama Angel Baby Diaper Rash Soap.

**Again, check the labels! My first choice is Earth Mama Angel Baby Baby Oil.

To make the wipes:

1. Mix all the liquid ingredients together.
2. Put paper towels in a large mixing bowl, and pour the mixed liquid over the top of the paper towels.
3. Let the mixture soak through for approximately 10 minutes.
4. Turn paper towels upside down and allow to sit for another 10 minutes.
5. Pull out the center cardboard core and the wipes will pop up through the middle of the roll.
6. Store your homemade wipes in a gallon-size plastic bag, plastic storage container with a lid, or re-use an old disposable wipes container.

For extra savings and to promote a greener Earth, try using cloth diaper wipes. Just soak the cloth wipes in the above mixture, roll up the wipe, and place in a container, gallon-size plastic bag, or a wipe warmer made especially for homemade baby wipes.

Another option is to place the above mixture into a spray bottle and spray directly on your baby’s tushie. Gently pat dry with a moisten wash cloth or cloth wipe.

Hope your baby’s bottom comes out clean, smooth and soft while saving you $$$!

Help answer the question about baby me

What have you baby proofed around your house that never would have thought to baby proof?
Now that I have a 16 month old owning my home I have been astonished by everything that has had to be baby proofed! I am going shopping tomorrow for stove knob covers (never would have thought in 1,000 years to baby proof the knobs on my stove). What have you all found to be over board, but necessary to baby proof as well?

    3 cups of boiling water
    1 tbsp baby oil
    1 tbsp liquid baby soap
    1 tbsp baby lotion
10 drops of tea tree oil
    Bounty paper towels

I make my own because my baby is very prone to nasty diaper rashes and the tea tree oil really helps.

Yes, you can put them in the refrigerator. I make about a week's worth of wipes and have not had them get moldy (I leave them out).

For home use, you don't need to make anything. Buy a dozen or so of the *flat* cloth diapers (not the "prefolds"–the huge ones made of very thin fabric). Cut them in quarters (or smaller if you want), and keep them near the changing table and have a bowl of plain water. You can just dip in the water and wipe. They are small and won't take up much space in your laundry. They're reusable so you aren't creating a lot of waste, either. You could even use them when you go out if you have a way of bringing along some water safely (or will have access to water where you will be changing baby).

Then, all you need is a well-sealed container that you can put the used wipes into. And nothing is softer on a baby's skin that 100% cotton!

If you are looking for a recipe for wipes that are similar to the ones you buy, you can take a roll of paper towels and cut it in half through the middle to make 2 half-rolls. Then, you take out the tubes from the middle and place one roll into an empty wipe container (wash it well if you are trying to avoid the chemicals used in the original product). Add water and a gentle soap. Pull the towels out from the *middle* of the roll, not the outside.

Just get parents choice wipes from walmart, they work great, they're easy, they're very cheap and I love them. In the long run they'd be cheaper than making your own. Huggies and pampers are a different story though, they are very spendy!

Sorry, I've never heard of chunks of baby wipe solution?? Here is the recipe we use:
    3 cups boiling water
    1 tbsp baby oil
    1 tbsp liquid baby soap
    1 tbsp baby lotion

EDIT- Oops, I forgot I also add 10 drops of tea tree oil, it's great for preventing/healing diaper rash.

I made up my own little thing for this when my son had a surprise diaper rash (my 4 children combined only ever had 5 rashes). I used paper towels called Vive`. They're extra absorbent and you can tell the difference just by touching them. They feel like a really soft baby blanket. Then, I put 2 1/2 cups of warm water in a basin and add 1/3 cup of Witch Hazel (skin protectant) and mix it around. I took the towels and folded them like wipes, stacked them up, and dunked them in the water/ witch hazel mix, and rung them out (yes, they're durable enough to do this without tearing). then I put them in an empty wipe container. My son's rash cleared up after three changes and he hasn't had one since.

the Witch Hazel will not burn or anything. It's very soothing and it protects wonderfully.

I recently started using a solution made up of vinegar, hot water, and a little liquid soap. I use it in a spray bottle. But, you could use it to make wipes. It works good, especially as a "green" cleaning solution. It can be used for floors, counters, stove, bathroom…everything basically…

I think I'm misunderstanding your question but if you're only using sewing tape then no. Since I most likely am misunderstanding your question I would suggest not only using sewing tape to keep the diaper together. Cloth diapers as I understand them are quite easy to make given their basic shape and then you can just safety pin them together at the corners. Fabric baby wipes would also be easy as they are just squares of cloth that you could hem using sewing tape, most likely.
