Ferrets – Caring For New Baby Ferrets

Ferrets - Caring For New Baby Ferrets

Although new baby ferrets are very sweet and cute, there are many things you have to begin to take on in order to train these adorable little pets. New baby ferrets that are old enough to take home have to be litter box trained so you avoid those ‘middle of the road’ accidents as well as teaching them not to bite and nip at your fingers. If you are considering getting a one for yourself, it is imperative to understand a little about the ferrets and if one will be the right pet for you.

Ferret Facts

Ferret experts say that within eight to ten weeks baby ferrets will have developed their entire personality so if the baby ferret is sweet and cuddly, it will likely always be that way. Similarly if the ferret is highly energetic at this age, it will likely always be that way except maybe more emphasized because as they grow, the personalities also grow.

As you ponder and examine over the babies you are looking at, determining which one is best for you, there are a few things that you should recognize and look for before deciding on a specific ferret. The first thing that you should realize is that ferrets live on average for ten years so you need to make sure that you can accommodate that for that length of time.

It is a sad fact today that much like baby kittens that grow up, the same goes for young ferrets who are irresistible, however the animal shelters are becoming over-run by ferrets whose owners no longer want them. If it is an option for you in your area, try to find a shelter in your area and adopt a ferret that although isn’t a new baby ferret, desperately needs a home and are often trained already.

With that option eliminated and you are still seeking a new baby ferret to join your family at home, it is best that you spend some time with the new baby ferrets to see which one matches your personality and will fit the best into your home. Like all people, ferrets have their own personalities and can range dramatically from ferret to ferret so take a bit of time and hold each new baby ferret to really get a sense of the personality.

It is also imperative to really examine the eyes of the new baby ferrets to ensure that they are not feeling ill and generally if the eyes are clear, it is a fairly good indication that the ferret is in good health. A nice healthy coat as well as nice strong teeth and whiskers are other health status indicators in ferrets in general as well as new baby ferrets.

Help answer the question about new baby

What is the courtesy for giving a new baby gift?
When a couple has a new baby, do you have to send a gift immediately or is it ok to send it within a few months? A good friend of mine out of state had a baby 2 months ago and I have been searching everywhere for a specific gift I want to get the baby related to her favorite sports team. Part of me feels bad but the baby is still a newborn so I was just curious. I'm going to be visiting her next month so I was planning on bringing it with me then. Is this ok?

Ferrets require a lot of attention, my cousin was in this same position, she wasn't able to take care of her ferrets, she had to give them up, because they were coming depressed, since they didn't get that much attention, granted they got basic care, but the baby go so much of her time.

My advice would be to find them a good home where they can get the attention they need.

You should have done research BEFORE you decided, oh I want a ferret.

They will try to kill guinea pigs, rats, rabbits, etc., because they were originally bred to hunt rabbits.

    You need:

A Large cage, if your getting two, get a 4-6 level cage for them.

Ferret food, I'd suggest Nutriphase, my ferret loves it.

    Ferretone

    Litter box and litter

    Bed

    Water bottle

    Food bowl

DO NOT buy toys for them, you can make your own MUCH cheaper. (Ie. Take a dryer hose and clean it up, or a box full of shipping peanuts. (with your supervision!))

I would definitely recommend a pet store. I got all of mine from Pet Goods. I would NOT recommend Petco. Every Petco I've been in has about 6 full grown ferrets in those small cages (small for a ferret that is full grown sharing the space with 5 others). It is usually dirty and they look so sad. I can only imagine they are full grown because they don't sell there. It could be a different case, but I am an animal lover and I have been to many of the locations because they carry a great bedding I use for my hedgehogs, rats and hamster. The Pet Goods on Route 17 in Paramus is a very good place to get a good healthy ferret. My fiance worked there for 5 years and every shipment of ferrets came in and was sold within days, if not by the end of that weekend, depending on delivery date. You can also look for a private breeder, but like the above answer you are not going to be given a baby that is not yet weaned. Ferrets come into pet stores at about 5 or 6 months old. The wet food is an option but my 4 little guys ate the hard food from the day I brought them home. When they were babies I also gave them Uncle Ben's Duck Soup, it fattens them up, it's good for them and they like it!! Like the first person said you can find a rescue too, this could be a rewarding experience as well. My youngest, Gizmo, is a rescue. He was not taken care of in his first home, so when we got him he was skin and bones, we hand and bottle fed him back to health and now he is our fattest and most rambunctious one!!

http://www.ferretcentral.org is an excellent site. Babies can be nippy, so watch for that. Also, when they fall asleep, it's like they're dead they sleep so soundly! Scared me to death the first time mine did that! Otherwise, just get him used to being handled, having his toenails trimmed, etc.

    Hi,

A very well written essay, I would think your parent would be proud of you for spending so much time on this. It's one one of the best "please can I have" letters I've seen on Yahoo.

As for your parent giving in, I can not say, but any one of my children wrote this, I would seriously consider it. You could try to borrow books on ferrets and show your parents how interesting these can be, do more Research on them to. The more you know about them, the more your parents will trust you looking after it.

I wouldn't worry about spelling mistake everyone does, and again will show your parents your thoughts, and not just copied from elsewhere.

Give yourself a little while to grieve and then adopt one from a shelter. You wouldn't be replacing your old ferret but you would be giving a chance to one who might not have one otherwise. It would almost be like you are commemorating the life of your passed ferret, don't you think?
It sounds to me that you took care of your old fuzzy very well, so don't think twice about that. Please try to take your ferret in to see your vet once a year at least. It's so important. You got lucky once, who knows if you get lucky this time.
    Aren't they the greatest pets?

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Ferrets are such lovable pets. If you really want to look into getting another ferret to complete your crew I would wait until you know for sure the ECE is gone. Recovered ferrets can shed the virus in stools for 6+ months after initial infection. You can confirm if the virus is shedding by using a fecal PCR test to identify the marker or have an intestinal biopsy done. I would make sure both of your current ferrets are completely cleared of the ECE before introducing another ferret. Because the virus can be shed for up to 6 months following infection, and can be transmitted on clothes, shoes, ferret-to-ferret contact, etc,. You should always wash your hands and clothing between handling other ferrets. and make sure to sanitize their cage often to help clear the infection

they have ferret shampoo that is made to get rid of fleas. ferret skin is different than a cats so it may be harmful to use it on the ferrets. FERRETS ARE NOT LIKE CATS. i would advise you to not use cat products on ferrets. PRODUCTS LIKE FRONTLINE, ADVANTIX, ETC. ARE NOT TO BE USED ON OTHER ANIMALS OTHER THAN THE ONE IT IS INTENDED FOR. IT CLEARLY STATES ON THE BOX USE THE PRODUCT ON THAT SPECIFIED ANIMAL ONLY AND DO NOT USE ON OTHER ANIMALS. most pet stores carry ferret flea shampoos and it is not expensive. please, please try that instead. don't treat your ferret with these product, it is very dangerous with the chemicals that are in them. plus if it was intended to be used on ferrets wouldn't they make a product for them. i have looked for it and noboby as of right now makes products like this for ferrets. use the ferret flea dip maybe twice in one week and it should help clear up the problem. worked on mine.
