How To Purchase A Safe Baby Crib
Babies are a wonderful addition to any family, but can add up to a lot of added expense. One of the most expensive items that you will purchase for your baby is a baby crib. It can also be one of the most dangerous.
When searching for one of these pieces of baby furniture, you should keep in mind that according to some statistics, approximately 50 infant deaths and 9000 infant injuries occur each year in crib-related accidents. Because of these facts, you should always check to ensure that any crib that you may want purchase is safe for your baby.
There are several safety features that you should look for when purchasing a new baby crib. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has enacted regulations to ensure the safety of your baby while in these beds. You should make sure that any baby crib that you may purchase has these specifications. The first regulation states that the vertical bars or slats should be no further apart than 2 3/8″ or 60 mm. This prevents the baby’s body being able to fit through them and the child becoming lodged by his head.
A second regulation deals with holes or decorative cutouts on the headboard. These should not exceed 2 3/8″ also to avoid your child’s head being stuck. Purchasing a crib with a solid head board is probably the best way to go.
The third regulation by the Commission suggests that you check to make sure that none of the vertical bars on a crib side are broken off. You should be sure that all the bars in the crib are sturdy and intact. Any missing bars will leave a big gap that can cause your child to slip through and fall to the floor.
Other safety issues that are not addressed by the Commission but are still important for the safety of your baby include baby cribs that come equipped with wheels. A new baby crib on roller wheels may seem like a good purchase. However, there are certain factors that you need to consider when looking at this style. If your house has hardwood floors, the slightest bump will cause the crib to begin rolling. The crib will also roll if you lean against it as you are bending over your baby. Older siblings can also be a danger to the baby in a crib with wheels. Your other children may push it around, causing it to overturn or slide down stairs. You can purchase a baby crib on wheels that has a locking mechanism, but it is probably a better idea to avoid this style completely.
Another valuable safety tip is to check to ensure that the crib mattress fits inside the crib properly. The standard mattress size for a crib is 51 5/8″ by 27 ¼”, although some cribs on the market today do not use the standard size. To check to make sure that the crib mattress is the right size for the crib, place your fingers between the mattress and the crib sides. If you can fit two fingers side by side, the mattress is too large and may enable your baby to slide between the mattress and the crib side and end up with the mattress on top of him. Mattress firmness is also important. As soft mattresses have been linked with Sudden Infants Death Syndrome you should make sure that your baby’s mattress is firm and solid.
Buying a baby crib can be one of the most important purchases you can make. By completing the safety checks that were previously discussed you will be able to purchase the safest baby crib possible.

I never wasted my money on them.. yeah they look cute but are so not needed! I just had a sheet and a quilt (my mom makes really nice ones for all of the grand babies) and a crib skirt (because I store stuff underneath) It's not like babies car roll with enough force to hurt themselves in a crib
Test it first. A better paint store will have test kits of lead-based paint, 2 tubes, does 4 tests, about $18. Or cheaper on line from the manufacturer: http://www.homaxproducts.com/products/paintaccessories/02/index.html
It is a simple and easy test. You can also use it for house paint, toys and ceramics.
A lot of paint contained lead in the 1880s, but not all did.
If it is lead-based paint (LBP) from 1880, the lead content is likely very high and you should get it striped BY SOMEONE ELSE and then repaint it. I say that because if you scrap or sand it yourself, you'll generate LBP dust onto your clothes, floor, etc. And it is the dust that is a problem for under-5s as their brains develop and especially for 1-2 year olds because they are on the floor so much.
Getting a good coat of paint over the existing paint won't do much without good surface preparation (true for all painting tasks). And getting down to bare metal will expose you and your family.
If you insist on sanding it yourself, wear a HEPA-rated breathing filter (paint stores have then) because adults can get acute lead poisoning. And stand upwind of the work and don't do it anywhere the kids will ever play because of the LBP dust that will fall to the ground. Strip your clothes off before going in your house, bag them, and launder them before re-use.
Recycling Furniture and well just everything is fun! We almost never buy anything new. Infact Having Twins I needed 2 Cribs, I purchased one at a Thrift store for 80$ and one brand new for over 100$ and the Used crib is so much more beautiful than the new one.
I show it in my latest Video I did about the Nursery
Check it out!
I really like this series. Not only for nursery ideas, but decorating ideas in general. I like the idea of using original art and refurbishing furniture instead of buying new stuff. Keep these videos coming!
loved the idea with the framed essay. so cute.
That will probably make it too high and when you baby is able to stand, he/she will be able to get out/fall out and could get hurt. If I was you, I would get a step stool instead of putting two mattresses.
well with my kids that are grown now i always used a cool vaporizer it helps alot! and it doesnt have to be really close but the hot ones make the baby sweat and im sure thats uncomfortable ya know? if all else fails call your doctor for the right answer but i would advice a cool mist one good luck and hope your angel feels better soon
I used a co-sleeper until my daughter was about 4-5 months. It was the only way she would sleep! The one I have is a Close and Secure sleeper from Target. It folds up small and can be transported in a suitcase. It also has a little nightlight built into it – Perfect for midnight feedings! One of the safety features is a hard flap that sticks between the mattress and the wall. It also has a hard upper half to prevent against rolling accidents… also I used it to transition her into the crib once she got too long for it. I used to toss and turn a lot as well, but you would be surprised at how alert you really are when you have your little pride and joy laying next to you.
Another idea is to purchase a Pack-n-Play. A lot of models come with a bassinet attachment, and they fold up for easy transport. You can easily check it when you check your baggage at the airport. Also, a Pack-n-Play is something that you will more than likely use once your baby is a little more active (I didn't think I would at first, but now that my daughter crawls, I couldn't live without it… especially when we go to someone Else's house).
Good Luck, and congratulations!
P.S. I would check into getting your newborn a passport if you haven't already. The process has been extremely slow lately and may delay your move.
i would buy it now, heck it saves you money!!!! and its better to get all your stuff sooner than later
I think you should Keep up with this sort of theme! I love what they did with the room. Not everyone can afford to furnish a designer room
I hope to see more of these cribs
I love moses baskets. They are so cute. I don't think you need the head rest thing. He is laying down, not sitting up like in a car seat. If he needs to feel secure, try swaddling. Sometimes they can shake and knock a swaddle loose, so try one of those swaddling blankets that close with velcro.
Moses baskets are perfectly fine to use until they get bigger. In fact, there is are online stores that sell stands so you can use them a bassinett.
Keep the series going!
