Baby Safety in the Home

Baby Safety in the Home

Is your home safe for your baby? Your home may feel like a safe sanctuary to you, but to your baby, it could be a mine field. Get your house ready for baby by taking these precautions:

- Keep potentially toxic items (such as cleaning agents, medicines, vitamins, toiletries, mothballs, poisons, paint, oil, gas, harmful plants, and other potentially hazardous items) out of your child’s reach and utilize locks/latches on cabinet doors for added protection. Special note: Keep purses and bags out of your baby’s reach also, since these hold potentially hazardous items.

- Post the number for Poison Control (800) 222- 1222 near your phone.

- Ensure all smoke and carbon dioxide detectors are functioning properly and check the batteries every week.

- Cover all electrical outlets with appropriate covers or block with furniture. Special note: Some commonly used outlet covers are potential choking hazards. Look for outlet covers that cover the entire outlet or require an additional step to remove. You may even want to consider changing the entire outlet to a tamper resistant one.

- Secure any loose cords (electrical and blinds/drapes) to prevent accidental strangulation.

- Block passages to unsafe areas (stairs, bathrooms, laundry room, fireplaces, etc) by using gates, door knob covers, and by keeping doors closed and locked (if able).

- Secure toilet seats with appropriate safety latches/locks.

- Secure furnishings (dressers, TV, book case, etc) to the wall to prevent toppling.

- Make sure table cloths are secured or removed to prevent your child from pulling the table cloth and potentially injuring him/her from falling objects on the table.

- Place guards on the corners of your tables and other sharp edges throughout your home.

- Utilize door stoppers to protect your baby’s fingers.

- Keep windows locked and never leave a child unattended near an open window.

- Never leave your baby unattended on any elevated surface (i.e. sofa, changing table, high chair, beds, etc.). Be sure to use your safety harnesses.

- Utilize safety belts/harnesses whenever possible (i.e. high chairs, swings, changing table, strollers, etc.).

- Keep plastic bags, balloons, string, and rope out of your baby’s reach to prevent suffocation and/or strangulation.

- Ensure stair and porch railings are no wider than 4 inches apart. If the railings are wider, then cover with banister guards to prevent falls and/or entrapment.

- Never leave pets unattended around your baby.

Get down on the floor and look at each room through your baby’s eyes. It will be easier to see the potential dangers.Be sure to download our Emergency Contacts sheet and keep accessible in the event of an emergency. Watching your baby become aware of their surroundings and begin exploring their environment will be a magical experience. Make sure it’s a safe one too!

Help answer the question about baby me

How grandmother may help a baby if his mom is treating baby not good?
There was a lot of thing what this mom shouldn't do with that baby.
Grandma tried a lot of ways to change it. She was kindly talking to that mom, she was keeping eye and tried to prevent a lot of things. For example 2 weeks baby shouldn't sleep on the stomach or baby shouldn't be tightly enveloped in a flannel diaper too long and so go on.
How to do this all:
to avoid conflicts and do not hurt feelings of young mom and to help baby?

I looked into this once a little bit.

This is the closest I ever found to a blaze orange onesie:

    http://www.us.simplycolors.com/artikel.php?type=8&maat_id=&kleur_id=6&bedrukking=&tekst1_1=&tekst1_2=&tekst1_3=&tekst2_1=&tekst2_2=&tekst2_3=&lettertype=&grootte1_1=&grootte1_2=&grootte1_3=&grootte2_1=&grootte2_2=&grootte2_3=&kleur_bedrukking_id=&showBedrukking=voorkant

Not a perfect blaze orange color, but pretty close.

I've never dealt with this company, so I have no idea how good their products are.

I have been a SAHM since my son was born. When he was about 10 months old, we moved out of state for my husband's job. I didn't know a single person within a 200 mile radius.

To keep myself from getting "crazy" I try to make sure I get out of the house at least once each day. I made it my mission to find every local park, check out the zoo, the library, all the shopping malls, etc. I joined a church, and I found a mother's group on http://www.meetup.com that's pretty fun. I also got the "events calender" from the local library and the local community center and I try to attend EVERYTHING I can find that would be age-appropriate for my now 19 month old son. Some days, when there isn't anything else going on, I just take my son out for lunch somewhere and chat with the waitress lol.

I have to work hard and make a conscious effort to get out of the house and meet people, but it's worth it.

She should be telling the grandparents that they can come over and stay the night at her place if they want to see the grandchild.

call the police and child welfare.. How many times in this world are children harmed and even killed by their own parents. You are the baby's family too, and you are concerned, you need to be the voice for the baby, he can't call the police and be like my mama left me home alone, It only takes a second for a fire to break, someone to steal him, etc.etc………………………

The ingredient that was the initiator of the bark was FOOD. I have cats and yes, that is different than a precious baby, but if I am eating anything and the cat is near the food, the dog will snap at the cat.
Ordinarily there is an uneasy peace.

I would be very concerned about the dog and baby. That is a big dog and a little baby. When you are preparing food it might be prudent to keep the baby in a play yard and maybe keep the dog outside, if appropriate or on the other side of a toddler gate.

Personally, I wouldn't want to take any chances. Baby is #1 and there can be some real jealousy issues with a dog, especially since dogs are very much a family member.

The following site has some great suggestions that you may not have thought of.

Newborns can sleep in a crib as soon as they come home. However, many parents (myself included) find it more convenient to have the baby in a bassinette close to their bed for the first few weeks or months. This way you don't have too far to travel for middle-of-the-night feedings. This worked well with my daughter as I was able to fall asleep faster. Some small babies may also feel overexposed by being in a big crib all by themselves. Since our daughter was premature, we decided that a smaller bassinette would be more intimate and probably help her sleep better.

If you do decide that a basinette is best for you, I would recommend that you not use a travel bassinette. Rather, look at borrowing or purchasing a used "moses basket" or other bassinette (see the attached links to babiesrus). You may prefer to have your baby sleep in a crib if you are a very light sleeper. Otherwise, you'll be waking up with every single sniffle, sneeze, and grunt (which babies do a lot of).

    Best of luck!

We have a doppler that we purchased around 10 weeks and I used it every day. Sometimes twice a day! Ha Ha!

I too did the research on using the dopplers and came up with no factual studies showing that there was any harm to baby. It's very low frequency waves that bounce off baby and produce the sounds we hear.

    I think you're okay… :-)

    Good Luck and Congrats!
