The Safety Of Crib Baby Bumpers And Baby Crib Furniture

A very common safety concern when parents consider how to set up their baby crib furniture bedding is whether or not to use crib baby bumpers.

When it comes to this style of bedding for baby crib furniture, a 2005 study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding crib baby bumpers found that over 20 years, from 1985 to 2005, twenty-seven children aged one month to two years suffocated or were strangled by crib baby bumper pads or bumper pad ties. Aside from deaths, the study also found that there were a total of twenty-five injuries caused by bumpers or their ties.

What the study doesn’t make clear are the circumstances of those injuries or deaths caused by crib baby bumpers, and whether they might have been related to how the child was positioned for sleep, their general strength or whether they suffered from underlying medical conditions. Considering that twenty seven deaths over twenty years indicates one or two incidents a year, the possibility that other factors could have been involved in these cases is strong.

Most parents today now understand that there are many safety concerns regarding older baby crib furniture, such as slots that are too large and might allow the baby’s head to slip through, resulting in serious injury or death. However, when it comes to finding bedding for baby crib furniture, the safety concerns of the “professionals” sometimes seem a bit overboard. Newer baby crib furniture is manufactured with ultimate safety in mind, with slots that are now too small for a baby’s head to pass through.

The study, which analyzed three U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission databases for deaths related to crib bumper and crib-related injuries from 1985 to 2005, found that 27 children from 1 month to 2 years old died from suffocation or strangulation related to bumper pads or their ties. The study also found 25 nonfatal injuries attributed to bumpers. Crib baby bumpers also come in styles that have certain features with safety in mind as well. Most have ties that are on the outside of the crib that get tied onto the baby crib furniture post, and the only case where you wouldn’t want to use a crib baby bumper is where the child is so frail and weak that they can not even roll themselves around inside the crib. New parents have enough to worry about, and crib baby bumper safety should not be one.

ask friends, relatives, or talk with your ob about any parenting classes with older children. you might also advrtise at a local preschool and church.

caution though… check the stability, sturdiness, width of bars. all things, new or used, will impact your baby. try to find a more solid crib. though can be pricey, this is one area to take seriously.

we got our crib 10 years ago from a consignment store and it's lasted 3 babies. plus will be handed down to our grandkids. where other stores were particle/press board for $150 +, this is solid oak and cost $250 including the mattress.

Yes there are cribs already in the game.
    Go to buy mode
They are in the Misc section (3 dots icon)
Then click on the baby icon (I think it's a bunny?)
Anyway all the baby/toddler stuff is in the misc section.

Actually your question is valid. Too many other factors contribute to rate of crime, like overall neglect or abuse.

In the 70's child psycology was studying the effects of infants being left in their playpens too long instead of being out and about. In those days there were still the old type with slats and the modern with the strong net sides. It was considered stifling, frustrating etc.

So the market opened up to more educational activity toys and other childhood equipment. The Child product industry/market really started to boom then.

When the child is very young, he doesn't really see the overall view of the sides. He/she probably is learning to focus on the movement, shapes & colors on the mobile thats over head or hanging farther down at the other end and any other automated activity center attached higher up on the bed.

Later when the child becomes more aware, their time in the bed should be limited to sleepy time. So that they don't see it as punishment.

Basically that's how a lot of parents have to deal with it.

Until they can adapt it to the toddler bed set up.

I really like this series. Not only for nursery ideas, but decorating ideas in general. I like the idea of using original art and refurbishing furniture instead of buying new stuff. Keep these videos coming!

well for one you do have to comply with the standards in the country regarding the size in between the railings.

I would like it if the mattress was adjustable but the top height was VERY high, because for the first month or two that baby is not going anywhere and some cribs have the highest level too low.

Converting form crib to bed is nice as mentioned.

Made of SOLID NOT CRAPPY WOOD that doesnt leave TEETH MARKS. Keep in mind kids chew on stuff, it is annoying when you invest and your kid chews threw it because the manufactures didnt think to cover the railing with something.

Recycling Furniture and well just everything is fun! We almost never buy anything new. Infact Having Twins I needed 2 Cribs, I purchased one at a Thrift store for 80$ and one brand new for over 100$ and the Used crib is so much more beautiful than the new one.
I show it in my latest Video I did about the Nursery :)
    Check it out!

I am just under 5'4" and I have a stationary side crib. I worried that I would have a problem with it, so I wore flats and practiced bending over some of the cribs in the stores. The cribs were all different heights, so I wouldn't suggest purchasing a stationary side crib without seeing it first.
